Today as we come to Psalm 149 you would imagine that all that could be said has already been said, all that has been sung, already sung. However this psalm begins with an invitation to ‘Sing to the LORD a new song’.

Have you ever been to watch a play, maybe in a theatre or even in a school, and at the end all the key characters come on stage taking a final bow before the audience. In Psalm 147, one of the final Psalms we have opportunity to listen and to watch as key themes from across the Psalms are brought out for a ‘final bow’ reminding us of the great themes of who God is and what God has done.

Athletes talk about entering ‘the home straight’ after a long race and today we enter what is the home straight of the book of Psalms. Psalms 146-150 come as a collection of psalms at the end of the book. We don’t who wrote them but they all begin with the same words:

‘Praise the LORD.’

Psalm 145 is the final psalm written by David. As I begin to read this psalm I find that I am full of expectation, curiosity, interest. What is David’s final contribution going to be, what is he going to say, having already come through so much, said so much, lived so much.

The psalm itself begins with words of praise, an ‘every day’ thing for David, a foundation to his life, a central rhythm to who he is.
