Psalm 145 - Good to all

Psalm 145 - Good to all

Read: Psalm 145 vs 1-21

Psalm 145 is the final psalm written by David. As I begin to read this psalm I find that I am full of expectation, curiosity, interest. What is David’s final contribution going to be, what is he going to say, having already come through so much, said so much, lived so much.

The psalm itself begins with words of praise, an ‘every day’ thing for David, a foundation to his life, a central rhythm to who he is.

Having written many words along the way David comes to a place where he reflects upon God’s greatness as a greatness that ‘no one can fathom’. This greatness is not a greatness to be held onto. The great genealogies (family trees) of the Bible (see for example Genesis 5, Matthew 1, Luke 3) remind us that faith in the LORD is an intergenerational thing, something to be preserved, guarded and handed on, something to be talked about along the way (Deuteronomy 6:7).

So one generation commends God’s works to another (vs 4), they speak of His glorious splendour (vs 5), they tell of the power of His awesome works (vs 6) and celebrate His abundant goodness (vs 7).

I imagine David seeking out words that will do God justice, words like vs 8:

‘The LORD is gracious and compassionate,

Slow to anger and rich in love.’

This has been David’s experience of God through His life. He has known God’s compassion (vs 9), He has found himself a citizen of this everlasting kingdom (vs 13). He has fallen on God time and again and always found Him trustworthy in all His promises (vs 13). He has fallen and been lifted up (vs 14), he has been satisfied with all that he has needed (vs 16).

So this psalm becomes not only a psalm of testimony, but a psalm of invitation; to make this God our God, to call on Him, and to find Him ‘faithful in all He does’. These are words to sing and pray, and then to sing and pray again, and again.

Prayer: Lord thank You for Your faithfulness in all things time and time again. Today I bow before You and look to You in thankful praise.
