Psalm 58 - There is a God

The world of the Psalms was a very different world than we live in today. ‘Rulers’ whether of a tribe or nation were people who dominated the lives of ordinary people. Leaders were strong and the strongest leaders survived.

The presence of ‘rulers’ provide a backdrop to the book of Psalms. From Psalm 2 (at the beginning) through to Psalm 148 (at the end) ‘rulers’ are a group of people who the Psalmists are aware of, who they thing about and who they pray about.

Read: Psalm 56 vs 1-13

The title to today’s Psalm, Psalm 56, tells us that it was written by David ‘When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.’ The stories of David, found primarily in 1 and 2 Samuel, are foundational stories for the Christian faith. The sheer detail in which the Bible works through the biography of his life alerts to how incredibly useful (2 Timothy 3:16) it can be for the follower of Jesus to have these David stories ingrained within their imagination.

Do you ever pick up a book and start by turning to the last page, wanting to start, by seeing how things finish? Psalm 55 is one of the longer Psalms that we have been reading. It ends with the words ‘I trust in you’ (vs 23).

Read: Psalm 54 vs 1-7

My parents grew up during the years of the Second World War. Recently I came across a ‘Child’s National Identity Card’ and a ‘Children’s Ration Book’, both issued in 1941, that belonged to my dad and my mum. Handling those, now historic, items takes me back to a moment in history, before I was born, and yet a moment that was real and experienced by many.
