Read: Psalm 80 vs 1-19

There’s a lovely tender tone to the opening words of Psalm 80:

‘Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,

You who lead Joseph like a flock.’

Asaph, who is writing this Psalm, knows that God is enthroned between the cherubim (vs 1) and with almost naïve trust he asks that God would shine His face upon him and upon His people. Like so many of the Psalms these are not words about God, these are words to God:

‘Restore us, O God;

If someone was to ask you today ‘How’s things with your heart?’ I wonder what you would say? That’s a question that could be answered at a medical level (perhaps following a test at your GP’s surgery) or it could be answered at an emotional level (commenting on how you’re feeling in a particular situation). However when the Bible thinks about the condition of our ‘heart’ it has in mind how we are doing with God and whether we are ‘whole-hearted’ or ‘half-hearted’ for Him.

Yesterday we were looking at the first part of Psalm 78 and its account of God’s provision for His people bringing them out of slavery in Egypt and setting them on a journey towards the Promise Land. Today we pick up the story in vs 17. This verse begins with the word ‘but’. God had rescued His people and provided for them time and again but … in spite of this these rescued people, these saved people, continued to sin.
