When you read the Bible, in both Old and New Testaments you find God’s people living out life in a huge variety of circumstances and situations. So, for example, in the book of Philippians (a letter written from prison) the Apostle Paul wrote:

Read: Psalm 83 vs 1-18

Psalm 83 is a prayer prayed in the middle of the things. The things that are going on and the things that surround Asaph as he prays are not good. Asaph was a ‘Levite’, someone who served God in the temple. He worked under the supervision of the king, he was ‘skilled in music’ and his job was to lead the people in praise, and through music to keep a worshipping people focused and centred on God (1 Chronicles 25:6).

We live in a world where national rulers, be they presidents, prime ministers or monarchs are regularly in the news. They ‘make’ the news, and their decisions, for better or for worse, affect the lives of many many people. I read Psalm 82 and I picture the Psalmist turning on his TV and seeing a gathering of all the most powerful people across the world (he calls them ‘gods’ in vs 1). 

Read: Psalm 81 vs 1-16

Psalm 81 begins with a summons for those gathered in God’s name to sing to Him, and to do so with joy. There is a reason for this (He is our strength) and a way that it is be done, with music, a timbrel, a harp and a lyre. A timbrel was a kind of tambourine, when it was played people often danced. The strings of a harp would have given body and volume to what was being played, while the lyre was a smaller stringed instrument played like a guitar.
