Sovereign Over Us

Sovereign Over Us

Sovereign Over Us

There are times in the life of a church when certain themes seem to emerge. Themes that keep on rising to the surface as we worship and study the Bible together week by week. Recently I have been struck by a recurring emphasis on what is sometimes referred to as ‘the Sovereignty of God’ – the big idea that no matter what is going on (in our lives / in the church / in the world) God is not only in control but God is also at work, working out His big purposes, in Christ, to bring salvation and healing into a lost and broken world.

Already we’ve seen this theme at play in the book of Philippians (Paul is in prison, the future is uncertain and yet he is confident that God will finish the work that He has begun – Philippians 1 vs 6). I was struck by this theme last night, at our midweek, as we looked at the Old Testament book of Esther and how with God’s people facing wipe-out God had His servant Esther in the right place ‘for a time such as this’ (Esther 4 vs 14). God’s Sovereignty sometimes seen, sometimes not seen, but always there and always at work.

Yesterday Dave Currie (who I worked with when I was In Ballysillan) sent me a link to a song called ‘Sovereign Over Us’. I hadn’t heard this song before but the words and the production on this version are really great. Take time to listen to this … and whatever is going on today (in your personal circumstances, in our community or in the wider world) allow the truths of this song to reach deep into your soul.

God bless,

Niall
