Psalm 25 - I Trust in You

Psalm 25 - I Trust in You

The word ‘trust’ is a Bible word. It’s used 140 times in the Old Testament and 30 times in the New. ‘Trust’ is a doing word in the Bible. Time and again in the Bible we see people putting their trust in God and when they do it plays out in how they live and what they do. So for example in Exodus 14:31 when the people ‘put their trust in LORD’ they kept their eyes on the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, following the LORD day by day across a treacherous and previously unnavigated wilderness. When in Acts 14:23 a group of new leaders ‘put their trust’ in Jesus, Paul and Barnabas felt confident to leave a group of young churches in these new leaders hands.

Psalm 25 is a Psalm of trust. It begins with David affirming where he has chosen to put his trust: ‘In you, LORD my God, I put my trust. I trust in you …’

When Jesus called His first disciples He called them to be ‘followers’ (Matthew 4:19). In todays language calling someone ‘a follower’ has become a mocking term of derision, someone who can’t think for themselves. However David (a great solider and a great King) is neither embarrassed or ashamed to identify himself as someone who is seeking to live the life of a follower.

In vs 4 David prays that the LORD will teach him His paths, that He will guide him (vs 5). Every day (vs 5) David is placing his hope in the LORD. He looks back to a time when he didn’t live this way, and he acknowledges that he still has an inner tendency to go his own way (s 7). David however knows that God not only forgives sinners, but instructs sinners in His way, and that He guides the humble in the way they should go.

David’s hope is in the LORD (vs 21). David is not ashamed to say he is living the life of a follower.

Prayer: Lord Jesus help me to follow you today. Guide me, instruct me in what is right. Keep me close to you. Keep me trusting in You alone.
