Psalm 19 - The Glory of God

Psalm 19 - The Glory of God

When we live in difficult times it can feel as if every day is the same. I’ve been speaking to various folks in the past few days who have said they have found this week a lot harder than last. The novelty of a new situation and new challenges is wearing thin. For some the demands and intensity of ‘all being in the house’, for others the isolation of being home alone. Others are out at work, many plunged into situations where the daily and incoming sense of pressure feels almost too much to bear.

We’re far enough into the Psalms to know that David lived much of his life in very troubled times. Yet we are also learning that David lived with a great aliveness to who God was, an enormous responsiveness to the God He knew and to the God who he was daily learning to praise and trust.

In Psalm 19 David marvels at the glory of God seen in creation. David sees order in a creation that is unfolding ‘day after day’, ‘night after night’ (vs 2). God is present and active in this creation and so every day becomes a new occasion for meeting with God and responding to Him.

As each day David turns to God’s word he finds his soul refreshed (vs 7), he finds a joy in his heart, light in his eyes (vs 8). In these deeply troubling times I think many of us are honesty beginning to grow in a personal sense that God’s word is ‘precious’ like gold, and ‘sweet’ like honey. So each day we pray for God’s keeping and His working in our lives (vs 12-13) that each one of us may be able to name Him ‘my Rock and my Redeemer.’ (vs 14)

Prayer: Lord the heavens declare your glory. Your law is perfect and it refreshes my soul. Make me wise today in the choices I make. Keep me from sins that are obvious and from sins that are not. May my life be pleasing to you, my Rock and my Redeemer.
