Praying for the Middle East

Praying for the Middle East

The situation in Gaza and Israel has been dominating the news over the last number of weeks. Reports from the region paint a picture of a heartbreaking humanitarian crisis. Since the beginning of July over 1600 Palestinians and 64 Israelis have lost their lives. News reports this morning speak of fresh waves of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City and renewed rocket attacks by militants on Israel. In the midst of all of this ordinary people's lives are being torn apart. One of our key mission partners Open Doors, in an article this week gives insight into the chaotic and distressing situation currently unfolding on the ground in Gaza.

Those of us who have visited the Middle East in the past (whether in Israel or among Palestinian communities) cannot fail to be struck by both the beauty and tragedy of this deeply troubled part of the world. Yesterday (01.08.14) the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Rt Rev Dr Michael Barry, issued a statement encouraging prayer for the Middle East. Dr Barry's full statement can be read here

The Bible speaks of the Lord Jesus as 'the Prince of Peace' (Isaiah 9:6). May we seek Him on behalf of all whose suffering is great at this time.
