Palm 105 vs 1-22 - The promise He made

Palm 105 vs 1-22 - The promise He made

Read: Psalm 105 vs 1-22

I’ve all kinds of books in my study. Tucked away in the corner of a shelf is a book that makes me smile. It’s entitled ‘Me, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ and it’s dated 1976 (I was three years old). On first view the story is a familiar one with familiar charcters, snow white, Doc, Grumpy, Sneezy etc. But then suddenly out of the page jumps my name! ‘I’m Niall’ said the boy. Then he took Dopey to meet Fiona’ (my sister).

I can almost still remember reading that book for the first time, and realising that I was in the story, and this story was my story.

Moving across to Psalm 105 the parallels are of course inexact. Christians read the Bible not as a fairytale but as a true story. The story which Psalm 105 is a familiar story, with familiar characters. It tells of the wonders that God has done, and traces the activities out of Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph, illustrating how through them God was at work for the good of His people and the salvation of those who would trust in them. But then the words jump from the page:

‘You His servants, the descendants of Abraham, His chosen ones, the children of Jacob.

He is the LORD our God.’

Suddenly the penny drops, this is not just a story, this is my story, I am in it!  Galatians is a New Testament book that talks about the importance faith in finding our way into God purposes and plans. In 3 vs 7 it says this: Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham.’

The book of Psalms, as we have been discovering is rich in its retelling of the great early stories of the Bible, from the days of Abraham to God’s rescue of His people from Egypt and His leading of them towards the Promised Land. Picking up Psalm 105 our hearts leap to discover that through faith in Christ we enter in to this great, true, story of salvation. He is our LORD, we are His people … and for this and so much more we give thanks.

Prayer: Father thank you for that the story of the Bible is not just true, but it is our story. Give us eyes of faith to see ourselves as part of what You have been doing from ages past and what in Christ You have in store for all who trust in Him. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
