Daily Words - Our Lord

‘Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.’ (Philippians 2 vs 9-11 NIV)

The first disciples were not in themselves an impressive, or promising group of people. Peter denied knowing Jesus, Thomas doubted, as a group they argued, and James and John tried to outmanoeuvre the others and get the greatest places at Jesus’ side. These first followers were ‘ordinary’ people (Acts 4:13).

Yet read on and the story of the New Testament pivots upon events that changed absolutely everything. The cross, the empty tomb, and then the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. These events convinced a group of ordinary people as to extraordinary truths about the Jesus they had known. As they went out into the world, emboldened, ready to love, risk, serve and speak, they did do with a deep conviction that this Jesus was ‘Lord’. The word Lord in the ancient word was a word used to describe kings and rulers, it spoke of who was in charge.

Faith, love and hope for the Christian all root back to a central conviction. Jesus Christ is Lord. He is Lord of the whole thing, from beginning to end. This is an enormous truth. Though there is so much we do not understand, if we can get this one big truth into place, we will find there is much to be getting on with.

Prayer: Father in a world of so much noise and confusion, help to start each day, believing that ‘Jesus is Lord’ and to press on from there.
