Daily Strength - When Lonely

Daily Strength - When Lonely

‘Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.’ (Revelation 3 vs 20)

You hear a knock at the door. Who is it? It’s Amazon making a delivery. It’s the postman leaving off a parcel. It’s someone calling to read your electric metre. Often, these days, when someone knocks at your front door they do so for functional reason. A quick ‘hello’, a quick signature, and they are away again.

Revelation chapter 3 verse 20 pictures Jesus standing at the door of our lives and knocking. As He knocks He calls ‘Here I am … it’s me.’ This in itself is a remarkable image. The Bible tells us that Jesus was present and active at (and indeed before) the creation of the world. Today He sits in heaven on a throne and one day he will return to judge all people he is literally ‘the beginning’ and ‘the end’. Yet here is not forcing His way into your life, but standing at the door, and knocking.

What does He want? He wants you today to hear His voice, above all the other voices that clamour for your attention. He wants you to recognise that voice and step into the hallway of your life and open the door. Then He wants to come in, but not to leave you a message, or get your signature for something. He wants to sit down and eat with you, as you eat with him. The picture is leisurely, it is deeply relational, it is unhurried. It is amazing. Today, listen for that knock at the door, listen for that voice. When you do, open the door, not hesitatingly, not half-heartedly, but with thanksgiving, and know at that moment you are not alone.

Pray: Lord Jesus as You knock at the door of my heart, I want open up all of who I am to all that I know of
